FAQs

I appreciate you stopping by to learn more about where I stand and why I’m running. I know a lot of folks in West Texas are frustrated—you're working hard, raising families, running small businesses, and doing your best to make ends meet, while Washington seems more focused on playing politics than solving real problems.

This page covers the questions I get the most: what I believe about things like border security, education, taxes, healthcare, and what makes my campaign different from the usual choices. If you're tired of career politicians and looking for someone who'll actually fight for our values and protect our freedoms, you're in the right place.

Let’s dig in.

Who are you?

My name is Bernard Johnson, and I’ve lived in Abilene for nearly two decades. I’m a Christian, a constitutionalist, and someone who deeply values faith, freedom, and personal responsibility. After a successful career in the foodservice industry as a corporate trainer and manager, I made the decision to run for Congress because West Texas deserves real representation—not career politicians who bow to party bosses and federal lobbyists. I’m running to bring the voices of everyday Texans back to Washington.

I’m running as a Libertarian because I believe in limited government, individual liberty, and a return to constitutional principles. Texans don’t need more top-down control—they need leaders who trust them to make decisions about their own lives. You can learn more about the Libertarian Party of Texas at www.lptexas.org.

What do you believe in?

I believe in a strong, secure border with lawful immigration enforcement, but I also believe in treating people with dignity. Federal mismanagement of immigration is overwhelming Texas communities, and it's time Washington took responsibility for the policies it creates. Texans shouldn’t be left dealing with the consequences alone.

When it comes to education, I support school choice because parents—not bureaucrats—know what’s best for their children. However, I don’t believe taxpayers should be forced to subsidize private education for the wealthy. The current school voucher system risks pulling essential funds away from public schools, particularly in rural or struggling areas. We need options, but not at the cost of our communities.

Our economy is being crushed by reckless federal spending and inflation. I support lower taxes, fewer regulations, and ending the endless printing of money. Prosperity doesn’t come from Washington—it comes from the hard work of the people of West Texas. I’ll fight to restore a system that rewards that effort.

I am a firm defender of the Second Amendment. The right to keep and bear arms is fundamental and non-negotiable. I will never support legislation that infringes on the rights of law-abiding gun owners.

When it comes to healthcare, I believe in health freedom. Every Texan should have the right to make their own medical decisions without government interference. I support market-driven solutions that expand access, lower costs, and respect individual choice—without more mandates or bureaucracy.

Can Libertarians win elections?

Yes, a Libertarian can win in Texas—especially in West Texas, where people are tired of broken promises and party-line politics. Every day, I talk to voters who feel abandoned by both Republicans and Democrats. My campaign is about restoring trust, protecting liberty, and putting people before politics.

Voting Libertarian isn’t a wasted vote. It’s a vote for integrity, for the Constitution, and for a future free from government overreach. If we keep voting for the “lesser evil,” we’ll keep getting more of the same. I’m not a politician bought and paid for by special interests—I answer only to the people of District 19.

How can I get involved?

You can support this campaign by volunteering, donating, sharing our message on social media, or hosting a local event. Whether you have an hour or a whole weekend, we’ll find a way for you to make an impact. Volunteer here or donate here.

I also look forward to meeting folks face-to-face at community events, town halls, and local church gatherings across the district. You can keep track of where I’ll be on the Events Page, or sign up for campaign emails to stay in the loop.

Which district are you trying to represent?

I’m running to represent Texas’s 19th Congressional District, which includes cities and towns like Abilene, Lubbock, Big Spring, Levelland, Brownfield, Snyder, Sweetwater, and Plainview, as well as many rural communities across the region. If you’re not sure whether you live in TX-19, you can check by entering your address at house.gov.

The general election is on Tuesday, November 3, 2026. To register to vote, verify your information, or get early voting details, visit www.votetexas.gov. Your voice matters—and your vote matters even more.

But do you really want to hear from the people?

Yes,I want to hear from you. Whether you have a question, an idea, or just want to say hello, you can reach me anytime through my Contact Page or by email at [email protected].
